I remember bringing back home a Video Tape of Brenda Fassie sometime in the 2000s when I visited my Uncle in Rayfield. We played the tape everyday as soon as we came back from school, and soon enough, our anthems were songs like "Vulindela" (Make Way), Wedding Day, Black President, Soon and Very Soon, and many others, the titles to which I can't recall now. What fascinated me at the time was her stage performances, she was fire and ice, her emotions were raw and deep, you could touch her pain, and in her voice, you knew you were unto to something original and powerful.
I was magnetized to her, and what I saw her do and heard her sing definitely contributed largely to my choosing music as a career. It was Power. Brenda Fassie is the original bad gal,she had no issues with putting her breasts on display or smoking in public, one time her breast popped out during a performance in Washington DC, you would expect that she would quickly tuck it back into place right? No she didn't, she pointed the breast at her amazed audiance, declaring "This is Africa", and indeed it is. Brendawas a super star who had military escorts as she visited countries because of the sea of fans that came out to have a glance of Mama Africa. She was fearless, not once or twice, she has dragged the legendary Nelson Mandela to dance and sing with her. Her personal life was quite a turmoil however, it indeed broke my heart when I got to know that she was doing drugs, What? My Brenda? Her drug addiction led her to one rehab and another, and was possibly why she was aggressive to fans and the media, this however never kept her from delivering lifetime classics to the world. Brenda broke just about all social norms and expectations, she was a lesbian, she has severely declared her being bisexual. I chose however to lean on the positive side of this great woman. She made womanhood powerful, fearless and fun. Throughout all her controversy she was never boring.
